Merry Christmas 2014 and Happy New Year 2015

Another year is rapidly drawing to a close.

I am so glad we have modern technology to keep us connected.

The biggest change for us was putting Keelie and Kyle in a private school as they entered Second Grade and Kindergarten, respectively at Independence Christian School. Kori had been doing a great job of homeschooling, but with the kids having the personalities they do, actively homeschooling both of them right now was not looking like the best option due to a combination of factors. They have taken to their formal classrooms well. It helps that they’ve long been good readers and have had classroom activities before. The unexpected expense has been a challenge to accommodate, but we were blessed by radio station KSFH 95.9 FM and the school with a half-off voucher.

The first day of school for the 2014-2015 year! It's important to have a superhero shield.

It’s been about two and a half years since Kori underwent Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery and after many appointments to test and adjust the settings of her electronic pulse generator, well... we’re going to resume the treatments she was getting before DBS.

Since she’s not homeschooling, Kori has taken to selling beautiful inexpensive jewelry. I’m shocked at how affordable the items are, given how pretty they are. Pretty items sold by a pretty lady!

In late April, we traveled to see my paternal kin in Ohio and to attend services for my Uncle Bob. That was quite memorable and it was great to see everyone. Although traveling with kids always adds some difficulty, I was glad the kids were able to meet more of their relatives.

We returned to the start of “emergency” work in our master bathroom. It literally started up on the day we arrived home from Ohio, before we arrived home. It was needed because of shoddy work by the folks who attempted to flip our house before we came to be here meant that water was leaking out of the shower into the wall separating the bathroom and bedroom. Since the shower and the wall needed to be replaced, we took the opportunity to install a walk-in bathtub instead of a new shower. It’s very popular. I don’t think the kids have used the bath in “their” bathroom since we got the walk-in bath in ours! The bath isn’t just for relaxation, it is a practical matter. Nobody has to step over a low wall to get into it.

The kids have both been doing gymnastics practices one day per week and both did soccer this year - and played on the same team, along with two of their good friends. Keelie also did dance but finished with the end of the last school year and Kyle took karate lessons most of the year from Moo Yea Do (usually in the presence of the Grand Master himself, Tiger Yang!) but is either finished or taking a break. I don’t know which yet.

I have been podcasting about Disneyland with my friend Lynn and we’ve been collaborating on another project I’ve wanted to do for a very long time. Don’t worry – you can be sure I’ll tell you about it – over and over again! - when the time is right.

Earlier, I mentioned a funeral. In upbeat news, Kori’s brother Toby married Rory. Kori’s sister Kendra and her husband Steve graciously hosted the wedding at their home – on very short notice and on Halloween! Also, the next generation has started locally on my side of the family as my nephew Blaine married Victoria in a very small ceremony and now they have an adorable infant boy. It’s been fun referring to my sister Kim as a grandmother.

We literally couldn’t make it through the year without the love and support of our friends and family. To each and every one of you, we say “thank you!”

(This is actually from Easter.)

Summer 2012 Already?!?

Hey everyone! How are you doing? Facebook and Twitter continue to be the place to go to keep current on what we’re doing, but I do like the blogging format. The problem is, the moment I start working on a blog and the kids see the pictures, they climb onto my (Ken’s) lap and start making requests of who they want to see in pictures.
However, the kids have been staying with my family (for good reasons I will get into in another update), so I was able to throw this together without having to stay up extra late at night.
Let’s see… where did we leave off?
Christmas 2011 Castle
Ah yes, it was around Christmastime when we last gave an update. Living close enough to Disneyland to see and hear the fireworks does have some advantages. Kori and my mother (and anyone else who comes along) have been taking Keelie and Kyle to Disneyland on a fairly regular basis during the week. Those kids have no idea how spoiled they are!
Here’s Grandpa Pellman making a visit in January.

Kori and the kids meet up with some other mothers with young kids, often weekly. Here’s Kyle at a meet-up where they were learning about Groundhog Day. The day, not the movie.

Whenever the kids are sitting peacefully together, it is a good idea to capture the moment with a picture…

… and, perhaps, a commemorative coin from the Franklin Mint.
Every year, the kids have special Easter outfits. Here’s Kyle’s… such a ham…

And Keelie’s…

This was NOT Keelie’s Easter clothing…

…but she is wearing Kyle’s tie.
Big doings around here included the arrival, in May, of Cousin Aubrey, born to Kori’s sister Kendra and Kendra’s hubby Steve. Aubrey joins Cousin Lainey, who was born just nine days before Kyle. Kyle, remember, adores Lainey, and so does Keelie. Keelie is happy to have a younger girl in the family. Kyle is happy to have a cousin his age. They are now happy to have a baby around, too.
Here’s Kori with new arrival Aubrey…

And proud grandparents, Bill & Pam (known to my kids as Granddaddy and Puma.)

Yup, Keelie is happy to have another younger girl in the family…

I think this is the moment at which Kyle realized he was no longer the baby of the family…

He’s no longer the baby, but yes, he loves holding his Cousin Aubrey.

One thing making life a lot easier now is that Kyle is pretty much completely potty-trained, even though he’s still not even three years old. Yay!!!
Kori and the kids get together regularly with Kendra and her kids. In addition to that, going to Disneyland regularly, and meeting up with the local moms & kids regularly, Kori and the kids will regularly visit my family in Pasadena, and sometimes I will join them after work. We visit Puma & Granddaddy along with Kori’s other siblings, and Kori and I have been meeting up with a small group from our church every two weeks or so. So, we’re keeping busy.

Keelie made out like a bandit for her fifth… FIFTH(!)… birthday in June, enjoying a special day at Disneyland Kori worked hard to put together for the ladies. They wore matching purple shirts Kori made.
Keelie Turns 5
Granddaddy took that beautiful picture. Keelie also had a “small” family-only party at our house… which meant 25 people.
And here’s Keelie wrestling with Cousin Macon for some grub…

I have been appearing as a guest from time to time on The Sweep Spot podcast. So if you want to hear me rattle on about Disneyland, you can do so by listening to the episodes on which I’ve appeared.

2010 Christmas Card and Letter

Hey Everyone!

2010-12-04 AnniversaryKeelie stopped taking her naps, so our blog updates have been lacking. I used to work on the updates while she napped so she wouldn’t climb in front of the computer and ask to see more pictures. This update will also be serving as our environmentally-friendly (all-electric!) Christmas card and letter, which should work just fine, since you are here reading it.

We’re so excited about wishing you a Merry Christmas…

Christmas Blvd Picture 2010

Can’t you tell?

2010-12-19 Keelie and Kyle

“Lemme tell you about what a great deal this is, lil’ brother. We go to sleep, and when we wake up, there are new toys over there under the tree!!!”

Print that out, if you must have a tangible card.

This year has been mostly another boring one. which is good. Once again, we didn't lose our home, I didn't lose my job, no major crimes were committed against us, we didn't have to file a lawsuit against anyone, none of us suffered a major illness or injury, and the dog didn't die.

But we WERE interviewed for a podcast called “The Enthusiast Enthusiast”. We talked about being Disney enthusiasts.

Unfortunately, we did have two family passings this year. Aunt Vicky, the honorary grandmother for whom my younger sister was named, passed away after years of declining health. My stepbrother Justin also left us; he was too young to go. Both are missed!

On a positive note, we’ve been able to enjoy the growth of Keelie as she passed her third birthday celebration and Kyle as he enjoyed his first. And he did enjoy it…

2010-8-29 Kyle

Unlike his cousin Lainey, who had her celebration together with Kyle’s, Kyle had no problem getting messy with cake.

2010-8-29 Kyle 2

Kyle is almost 16 months of age and he still doesn’t sleep through the night except for rare nights here and there. I heard a lack of sleep may efekt mentle abilly tees, bud eye havn no tissed uh problum.

Kyle is a daredevil climber. He also has quite the temper. Not sure where he gets that. Ahem. He likes music a lot and will dance to it when he can.

2010-10-03 Kyle

Speaking of dancing, as we said in a previous update, we enrolled Keelie in dance class (ballet and tap) since Kori enjoyed dance classes when she was a little girl. Keelie’s class had a recital at an Anaheim holiday event.

2010-12-04 Keelie's first dance recital

She loves going to dance class, but it is hard to get her to pose for the camera with a good smile. We have to take the good shots candidly. Keelie also enjoys Sunday school, educational programming, and long walks on the beach. Uhm, well, ok I made that last one up.

We didn’t take any trips this year. Our free time that we spent out of the home was mostly spent with family. It is always nice to have the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins entertaining the kids because otherwise, given their ages, when we are out somewhere with them all of our energy and attention goes into making sure the kids don’t maim themselves or other kids, don’t break anything, don’t get stolen, and don’t miss a trip to the restroom or changing table. Take heed all of you who are planning to become parents.

Although we didn’t take trips, we did use our annual passes to take the kids to Disneyland frequently and now we also have Knott’s passes, so the kids are going to visit there regularly, too. Thanks to the grandparents who have contributed to both sets of passes!

That’s our year in a nutshell – er, uh, blog posting.

Whether you are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and worship Him as Lord and the One who has saved you from your sins… or are enjoying other festivities and traditions of the season, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a very happy and healthy New Year.

Below are some of the better pictures from the last several months… at least the ones that aren’t incriminating, if you care to look…

Please keep in touch!

One Year Ago

Things were very different a year ago. Kori was heading in to the final stretch of her pregnancy with Kyle, and had been in the hospital for the birth of our first niece.

It is amazing how much they grow in the first year.

Here’s a picture from back in late June, with Kyle preparing to feed the dog – which conveniently means he doesn’t have to eat as many vegetables.

06-27 Kyle

He tries to make this warning label seem all the more scary…

07-02 Kyle

Keelie enjoys taking a “bath”.

07-02 Keelie

Kyle celebrates Independence Day by practicing his purse snatching skills.

07-04 Kyle

He figures that as long as he smiles and wears outfits like that, nobody will suspect a thing.

We we to Aunt Vicky’s memorial, which included a luncheon at Caltech. Is Keelie contemplating her choices in high education?

07-23-10 Keelie

Kyle makes his “old man without dentures” face…

07-23 Kyle

And Keelie continues to make her pieces of art…

08-06 Keelie

I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be Liberace or what. Oh… Keelie just told me that is Minnie Mouse. Liberace, Minnie Mouse… it is easy to get them confused. As Kori pointed out to me, it is obviously Minnie Mouse. Before the addition of the black bow, it had been Mickey Mouse - notice the white gloves, the red shorts, and the yellow shoes? Speaking of art , Keelie has started taking dance classes as of this month.

08-07 Keelie

Thanks to Auntie Kim and Uncle Mike, Kori and I slipped away to see “Weird Al” Yankovic at the Orange County Fair. Yankovic and his band have long been my favorites. We don’t get a lot of nights out, so this was a rare treat.

Kim and Mike took the kids to a park, and I think that was Kyle’s first time to play directly on grass. So we didn’t quite get the same reaction when he took him to the park later that same weekend…

08-16 Kyle

Keelie, of course, is a veteran of the park, so she can show Kyle the ropes… literally.

08-16 Keelie and Kyle

Kyle just got his first haircut!08-20 Kyle

Kyle is starting to walk. Keelie walked much earlier, but Kyle picked up a few American Sign Language signs before Keelie did. Kids develop at their own rate, of course. Kyle has been very good at crawling, while Keelie had not crawled much before she took to walking.

Thanks for stopping by. Let us know how you are doing and what you’ve been up to. You can comment here or e-mail us a KEPellman [at] yahoo [dot] com.

Summer is Here!

Since I last updated this blog, I had a birthday, Keelie had her third birthday, and my nephew Macon graduated from my alma mater. On a sad note, we lost Aunt Vicky. No, not my sister. The woman who married my mother’s late uncle. She was Aunt Vicky long before that, though. She had been in declining health and had defied the odds for a long time – her death was not unexpected, but still sad.

She’s the one in red in this picture…

_DSC0408

When she saw the picture later, she asked, “Did I really wear red to your wedding?!?” Of course, it was December and reds and greens were part of the look of the wedding. She was like a grandmother to me, though she hated to be called that, so it was always “Aunt” Vicky.

On to happier thoughts… like playtime!

05-07 Kyle

Yes, we have a playpen full of colorful plastic balls.

The next five pictures were taken by Kori’s father, who definitely knows his way around a camera.

05-29 Keelie A

Keelie is getting into animated features, so I get to watch some of the DVDs in my collection. “Toy Story” and the sequel are favorites. She sings “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and she also likes “Mary Poppins” and will sing the songs from that movie, which goes along fine with the Sherman Brothers songs she knows from Disneyland.

Kyle is quite the crawler, and he’s learned to stand up without holding on to anything and sit back down.

05-29 Kyle A

The whole family relaxing in the hot tub…

05-29 Family

Kyle has been in the habit of nibbling on his own toes. When I try, Keelie says, “No Daddy! Kyle’s toes are yucky!” They aren’t yet though, since he’s not walking. Well, he was doing his thing and his cousin decided she wanted to try…

05-29 Toes

…ah yes… one of those pictures that will come back to haunt both of them.

05-29 Kyle B

Keelie and Kyle got decked out in Tiger Orange for Cousin Macon’s graduation.

06-18 Siblings

I went to SPHS, as did Kim, Vicki, Chris, and Blaine.

06-18 Family

There’s Cousin Blaine holding Kyle, Autie Kim, Cousin Macon in his gown, Nanny, Uncle Mike, Aunt Vicki, and Keelie.

Keelie 3rd B-Day Party_0005

Keelie contemplates turning 3.

Keelie 3rd B-Day Party_0064

For Keelie’s birthday, we had some people over for a party – it was mostly a family event, but when you have families the size of ours, that’s a lot of people. We’d only hosted one such event before since moving in. Keelie had a lot of fun and certainly enjoyed the presents and cake. So much so that fives days later she informed Kori that she was ready to turn 4, have everybody come back, and have me bring home another cake – but one with four candles. But she also talks about going back to being 2 and thus getting her crib back.

06-22 Kyle

Kyle hams it up for the camera as we watch Keelie enjoying one of her presents…
